The Logan Family Tree
Cassie Logan
Narrator and protagonist nine-year-old Cassie is a courageous and feisty young girl. She isn't afraid to stand up for herself and others, despite the consequences she knows she will face. She is ignorant regarding the idea of racism, yet she faces it so often throughout the plot. She is the only girl of the Logan children, but isn't afraid to be like her brothers at times.
Stacey Logan
Thirteen-year-old Stacey is the oldest of the Logan children, mature, yet childish at times. He is very protective of his friends and siblings. Stacey knows when to keep his mouth shut (unlike his sister, Cassie) in order to keep his close ones and himself out of danger or trouble. Although he is all these things, his mischief and temper can get the best of him.
Little Man (Clayton Chester) Logan
First grader Little Man likes things very precise in terms of neatness and practically everything else. He doesn't quite understand the injustices of being African American in this time period at his age, but he does know that it's unfair (and expresses these feelings of frustration and anger through fits and tantrums).
Christopher John Logan
Timid seven-year-old Christopher John is the third oldest child in the Logan family. He often lets others walk over him, being the passive boy that he is. Very much unlike his other siblings, he seldom stands out in a crowd. Christopher John quietly indicates his emotions towards the discrimination of blacks.
Papa (David Paul) Logan
David is the father of the Logan children and husband to Mary Logan. "Papa" is portrayed as an independent and respectful man. He values his family's well-being highly, as shown through his actions of working hard to keep their land.
Mama (Mary) Logan
Mary Logan is the mother of Cassie, Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man and wife of David Logan. She teaches seventh grade at her children's school, Great Faith Elementary. She deeply cares for he four children, which is evidently shown through her actions and words.
Big Ma (Caroline)
"Big Ma" is the mother of Uncle Hammer and David Logan and the grandmother of Cassie, Stacey, Little Man, and Christopher John. She knows how to keep her grandchildren out of trouble and how to run the Logan farm. Big Ma evidently doesn't care for how her grandchildren are treated, but tries her hardest to educate them on how to handle things right while maintaining a polite manner.
Uncle Hammer
Uncle Hammer is Big Ma's son, David Logan's brother, and the uncle of Cassie, Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man. He works in a factory in Chicago. Yet Uncle Hammer doesn't make loads of money, he still helps his brother with financial issues.
Paul Edward
Paul Edward is Big Ma's deceased husband and the father of Uncle Hammer and David Logan. Paul Edward worked hard to get his hands on his own land, the Logan family's Logan land.
Papa Luke and Mama Rachel
The Logan children's great-grandparents, Mary Logan's grandparents, and Big Ma's parents. They were taken from Africa and sent to America as slaves.
